This is the most critical step, determining the bag's strength, breathability, and water permeability. The mainstream process is the modern dry-lay needle punching technology.
Raw Material Preparation: Typically uses synthetic fibers such as polyester (PET) and polypropylene (PP). Many eco-friendly products utilize recycled PET flakes (from plastic bottles) as the raw material. To enhance outdoor durability, UV-stabilized fibers containing anti-ultraviolet additives are often selected to extend service life under direct sunlight.
Web Forming & Needling: The fibers go through opening, carding, and web laying to form a loose fiber web. This web is then consolidated via pre-needling and main needling to achieve the required strength and thickness, producing the felt fabric.
Key Post-Treatment: Singeing (Flame Treatment): This is a critical step for many high-quality grow bags. The inner surface of the felt fabric is passed through a high-temperature flame for singeing, which melts the tiny surface fibers and slightly reduces the pore size of the fabric. This treatment provides two major benefits:
Effectively prevents soil and water from washing out during irrigation.
Maintains the material's inherent breathability and permeability, allowing plant roots to "breathe" properly (critical for air-pruning).
Stage 2: Cutting, Sewing & Final Forming
Once the felt fabric is produced, it is converted into finished grow bags.
Material Slitting: The large rolls of felt fabric are slit into narrower rolls according to the required bag dimensions.
Cutting & Sewing: The slit fabric is cut into specific shapes (e.g., rectangular or circular panels) and sewn together using industrial sewing machines. Handles and seams typically feature multiple reinforced stitching to bear the heavy weight of soil and mature plants. To improve production efficiency, some manufacturers adopt a needle-punch integrated joining method (similar to industrial filter bag production), which directly entangles two layers of fabric together through needling, rather than using traditional thread sewing.
Inspection & Packaging: Each finished bag undergoes quality checks, including load-bearing and breathability tests. After passing inspection, they are packed in eco-friendly packaging. Some products may also feature additional functional components, such as drip irrigation tube ports or lifting loops.
